Recently in Dr. D's Class

As we all know, we've been reading Nervous Conditions in English class over the past few weeks.  I don't know If I am the only one (I sure hope not) but I've had a hard time understanding it.  So over this wonderful break that we had this past week, I sat myself down and reread the past couple chapters.  It was extremely difficult to do because I kept thinking "Emily, you've already read this, just go to class and listen to the discussion" or "Ask your friends, i'm sure they understand it!" or even "screw it, just enjoy your break!!"  But, I did it...  And it helped SO MUCH!  I highly recommend it to anyone that Is having trouble understanding what is going on.  Before I reread the chapters, I thought Maiguru was one of Tambu's cousins and I didn't realize that Maiguru and Babamukuru were married and had Nyasha as their child.  Like it was sad how much trouble I had with this book.  But hey, I get it now and thats all that matters!

In this weeks reading, we read about when Tambu went to the mission for school.  We read about how Maiguru treated her like royalty when she arrived at their beautiful home and how Tambu was frustrated with the way that Nyasha disrespected her parents, especially her mother.  In the chapters, we read about how Tambu thought that she was just jumpy because of all the change but I agree with Tambu, the way that Nyasha treated her mother and father and the way that she smoked just blew me away!  I would never treat my parents like that and I would especially NEVER smoke a cigarette so I understood Tambu's outlook on the situation.  Regardless of the fact that I need to pay close attention while reading this book, I have really enjoyed it and its a pretty entertaining novel.  Farewell bloggers!

Finally, I get to relax...

I think this is the first sunday that I'm not pulling my hair out because of stress.  Thats sad...  Anyway, for the past week, I have finally been able to relax and tend to my sleep deprival and it has been so AMAZING!  Last sunday at 5 in the morning, I was up and getting ready to fly out of New Orleans for a ski trip in Colorado.  This was my third time to go skiing and my second time to go to Crested Butte, Colorado.  I have never really been all that good because I have a terrible fear of crashing and injuring my self badly.  But this trip, I finally got my self confidence up and started hittin the slopes.  When I started on monday morning, I thought I was going to want to stay on greens the whole trip but I finally started skiing on more and more blues and then double blues and I have improved so much as a result of pushing myself. I also learned a deeper lesson, you don't get better at something unless you push yourself to do more difficult things.

Throughout my trip I got to hang out with some people I certainly knew but was not very close with.  I became close with Chris Sammons and Lauren Yegge, 2 people that are so fun to be around.  Not only did I ski but I also got to get a massage and a mani pedi.  While I was getting my toes and nails done, the funniest thing happened!  I was talking to the lady and the song "set fire to the rain" came on by Adele and the lady just busted out in Song!  It was hilarious!  I also caught up on a lot of movies that I haven't been able to see because I have been so busy and even some old movies that I hadn't seen in years!  By the end of my trip, not only had I improved my skiing skills but I made a lot of new friends, got my nails and toes looking pretty, and FINALLY got to sleep and just breathe.  I really needed this break.  So whens spring break??  Haha. later bloggers(:

Mardi Gras Break!

Hello bloggers!  I am just counting down the days until we are finally free for a week!  Aren't we all?  I'm so ready for a break from all this hard work and studying; but I am not only tired of all the work, I am tired of all the stress that I have to deal with!  I'm sure that once I have a few days of sleeping in and I finally get caught up on my sleep, I will be a little more willing to work and I will be in a better attitude.  Unfortunately, I won't be able to do much sleeping because this sunday I am leaving for Crested Butte, Colorado!

Last year was the first time I had ever been to Crested Butte and I love it so much!  The environment is so fun there and I had so much fun with the families we went with.  The only bad part is that skiing isn't particularly my idea of a "vacation."  I started skiing a few years ago (which is pretty late) because I was terrified!  So my parents being the pro skiers they are finally forced me to just go and try it.  I was so scared I was going to break my ankle or snap my leg right in half.  But once I finally got there and learned, I decided it wasn't so bad.  Since then, I've come a long way, I've grown to like skiing a little more but it still isn't my favorite thing in the world for a few reasons.  Number one, I hate cold weather SO MUCH!  Also, I am still very scared that I am going to severely injure myself.  Who knows how i'll feel about skiing after this trip, I will be sure to let you know because i'm sure something crazy is bound to happen knowing my luck!

Nervous conditions is going well, although it can be a bit confusing at times, I am starting to enjoy it more and understand it.  I am also finally starting to remember the different characters names which i really struggled with when we first began reading the book.  So far, we have learned about Nahmo, the narraters brother, and his different situations and attitudes.  We have learned about the process Tambu, the narrater has had to go through in order to go to school and how she got there.  We have also learned about Tambu's family such as her father mother, brother, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents.  We have learned a lot in only 4 chapters so far!  I am really enjoying this book and I look forward to seeing what happens with Tambu and her education and with her relationship with her brother.

Today, in class, we had some guests come and visit our class and talk to us about poetry.  They even performed some of their own work.  In that small hour I learned so much and it actually made me sort of like poetry.  We talked about a lot of different pieces and read them aloud.  By the end of the class period, the instructors told us to write a poem on something we felt we had a deep connection with, such as our global issue.  At first I had no idea what I could possibly write about because I didn't really want to write about what I had written my research paper on, but then we brainstormed some ideas.  After we finished I decided I would write my poem on gun possession (specifically by a minor), so here is what I wrote. (ps: its not very good!)

guns can be of use.
but also of danger.
sometimes they are
kept within, possession
of bad strangers.

We hear everyday,
the problems of the
world; but never
take action to
prevent such things.

My friend is only
fourteen when shot near the
heart.  How can this be?
He is much too young.

The cause was only
an accident, but it
could have been prevented
had we had a system of limits.

Another young man, only
sixteen years old, a close
friend of mine was shot as well.
He suffered the pain no
boy should suffer.

The cause may have been
an accident, but it could have
been prevented had we had
a system of limits.

I chose to write about this because the first boy that I wrote about was actually someone that I met over Christmas break in drivers ed and the second was a very close family friend so it really hit close to home.

English Class

In English/World History we have been writing a paper on a free topic that is a global issue.  I am writing mine on the neglect of women's rights in Bangladesh.  Recently we have finished the rough draft and it was great.  I worked very hard on it and it was sort of difficult to write so much on such a narrow topic, but i managed to get it done.   Personally, I don't think my rough draft is all that good because i felt so crunched for time.  Lately we have been so busy in school!  But when we finally do the revisions and editing, I think it will be a lot better!!

Also, we have started to read a book called Nervous Conditions.  So far, I really like it but it is extremely confusing!  I think it is very difficult to remember all the african names because they are so long and unique.  I have noticed that the narrarator, Tambu, is sassy and has a sarcastic attitude.  But she is very good at telling stories from what I have read so I think that it is going to draw my attention and make me enjoy the story a little more.

Weekend

I am currently redoing my room so this weekend I basically cleaned out my room/closet and did homework.  On friday, I came home from track practice went to dinner with my parents, came home and cleaned up my room a little then went to bed.  On saturday, I had a 2 hour driving class that I had to take in order to get my permit.  I have 3 more 2 hour sessions left.  I was SO nervous, I had never driven on the real road before and I was freaking out because this was going to be my first time.  After that, I came home and cleaned all day.  Fun weekend right?  Later on that night, I skyped with some friends and worked on my research paper until I just had to go to sleep.

The next day, sunday, I woke up and went to church.  Then came home and did homework all day.  Typical sunday for me.  Then I cleaned some more in my closet.  At the weekend, even though I did absolutely nothing fun, it was very productive and my room and closet look AMAZING!  I am also very proud of my Research paper which I spent a lot of time on!
